in awe of acrobats

Filed Under (Uncategorized) by on 23-11-2008

I stole this picture from the Cirque du Soleil online boutique, but the acrobatics show I went to did the same stunt.
Friday night a large group of us went to see the popular acrobatics show at the Chaoyang Theatre and I think it deserves all the hype.  Much like Cirque du Soleil, so if you enjoy that kind of thing you will like it.  I have only seen two CdS shows, Quidam and Corteo which are both travelling ones, so my comparison is based simply on that.  The stunts are pretty much the same, but there wasn’t as much story involved so it was really just stunt after stunt which I preffered.  Who goes for the story?  We just wanna see people do cool tricks!  The costumes CdS uses are way more elaborate, but other than that I would say this acrobatics show was just as good.  The things these people [...]

silk market success

Filed Under (Uncategorized) by on 23-11-2008

Thursday I went to the famous silk market just to check it out, with no intention of buying anything, and walked out with my hands full of stuff.  Those sales girls are tricky little devils.  It all started when I saw mahjong sets for sale, which was the one souvenir I wanted to bring home for myself.  Surprisingly I don’t see them around much so figured I should get it now while it was right there.  So I haggled down from 1400 yuan to 650 yuan.  Still probably way overpriced, but she seemed terribly upset by the deal.  And coincidentally enough two days later I did see the same set for sale at a store for 750 yuan, so even though I think that store is overpriced too, I couldn’t have been completely ripped off.  I also saw most of the other things I bought at the silk market at [...]

Chinese journalist sentenced to three years

Filed Under (Uncategorized) by on 21-11-2008

Saturday, November 22, 2008
BEIJING: A Chinese writer and journalist who was arrested after protesting against a power plant in southwest China was sentenced on Friday to three years in prison on charges of subverting state power, his lawyer said.
Daojun was sentenced in Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan province, in a trial lasting a little more than 30 minutes, said Beijing-based lawyer Zhu Jiufu. Three of Chen’s articles were presented in court as evidence that he attacked the Communist Party, Zhu said. “In my opinion, he was only criticising the party, and never said he would subvert it,” Zhu said.
Chinese Human Rights Defenders, an overseas group, said Chen supported Tibetans who protested against Chinese rule in March. The uprising of Tibetans across western China marked the biggest challenge to Chinese rule in Tibet in nearly two decades. Calls rang unanswered on Friday at the Chengdu Intermediate Court.
Chen, 40, was detained five [...]

Faye and Zhang’s Dec 20 Concert

Filed Under (Uncategorized) by on 21-11-2008

Netease (21 Nov 2008) reports a strong likelihood that Faye Wong (??) will appear in Zhang Ya Dong’s (???) December 20 concert in Beijing’s Olympic Sports Center (????). Other stars mentioned in connection with the event are Hackberry (??), Li Yuchun (???), Sandy Lam (???), Anthony Wong (???), and Joey Yung (???). More than likely, she will participate as a spectator, sitting in the audience. However, the hope is that she will actually perform on stage. If this report is credible, I believe we’re seeing the first steps in Faye’s eventual return to the stage. However, it’s too early to tell if this report is accurate.

Michael Phelps Dives in With Subway

Filed Under (Uncategorized) by on 21-11-2008

Subway has signed Olympic gold-medalist swimmer Michael Phelps to be its latest athlete-spokesman. The first campaign with Phelps will focus on the quickservice chain’s mix of healthier options, such as grilled chicken on wheat, and indulgences, such as a meatball sub.

From Advertising Age:
Michael Phelps is racking up endorsements like they’re gold medals. The Olympian has inked a deal with Subway to represent the brand “across all marketing channels” in a campaign touting the chain’s variety of offerings. Mr. Phelps also helps promote Kellogg, Visa, Speedo and Rosetta Stone.
The deal, which locks Mr. Phelps into an exclusive fast-food contract, is surprising because the swimmer openly campaigned for a relationship with McDonald’s during the Summer Olympics in Beijing, where he won an unprecedented eight gold medals. But this isn’t his first surprising endorsement. Mr. Phelps spurned General Mills’ Wheaties in August for an exclusive cereal deal with Kellogg.
“We enjoyed a [...]

U.S. Debt in Chinese Coffers

Filed Under (Uncategorized) by on 21-11-2008

Full article can be viewed on RussiaToday site and I would appreciate any comments to be made on this page.
A Bloomberg report recently stated that China has become the biggest U.S. treasuries holder, surpassing Japan. China holds $585 billion worth of U.S. treasuries, compared to Japan holding $573.2 billion.
Underneath the market transactions and commercial trading, there is a reason for Beijing’s interest in holding U.S. Treasuries and financing U.S. debt during today’s economic crisis. Think of it in simple terms: the U.S. is now in the pocket of China. Beijing’s willingness to help America finance its debt is simply a way of gaining political leverage.
China’s Leverage Over America

Tibet and Taiwan have long been sticking points between Washington and Beijing. Nevertheless, Americans have not spoken out against China’s lack of personal or political freedoms, nor has Washington expressed concern over China’s policies. It is very simple – America is depending more [...]

Greek - Chinese Relations Grow

Filed Under (Uncategorized) by on 21-11-2008

(GREEK NEWS AGENDA)    Chinese President Hu Jintao is scheduled to arrive in Athens on Monday, November 24, and it is expected that this visit will herald a new era in bilateral relations between Greece and China, which date back to 1972. The recent development of Sino-Greek relations has been stunning, especially in the sectors of economy and culture. After Athens hosted the Olympic Games 2004, preparations for the Olympic event in Beijing began, which required officials to meet regularly and discuss everything from know-how to security. These meetings soon expanded to include not only sports, but also trade, shipping and tourism. Discussions have helped China’s Cosco Pacific take over the cargo management services of state-controlled Piraeus port in a 35-year deal assessed to be worth €4.3 billion, and the Chinese president is expected to seal the deal officially during his trip next week. Other sectors of trade include lottery and jewellery: [...]
