How BaZi (Four Pillars) Works: The Logic Behind Your Chart

Knowledge4 min read

When people first meet BaZi — the Four Pillars of Destiny — they often expect mysticism. In fact, the system starts with something utterly ordinary: a calendar.

Four pillars from a birth moment

Take a birth date and time, look up where it falls in the traditional sexagenary calendar, and you get four pairs of characters: a year pillar, a month pillar, a day pillar and an hour pillar. Each pair combines a Heavenly Stem and an Earthly Branch. That is the whole “mystery” of the chart — precise calendar arithmetic.

The Day Master: who is reading the chart

The stem of the day pillar is called the Day Master — it represents the person. Everything else in the chart is read in relation to it: which elements are strong, which are missing, and which of the Ten Gods (combinations of the Day Master with the other stems) dominate.

Ten Gods, not ten fortunes

The Ten Gods are relational labels — “Officer”, “Wealth”, “Resource”, and so on. They describe patterns of behaviour and relation, not fixed outcomes. A strong Wealth star, for instance, says nothing about being rich; it describes how one relates to resources and opportunity.

Why the hour matters

Two people born on the same day can differ sharply if born at different hours. The hour pillar anchors the late-life trajectory and refines the element balance — which is why a serious chart always asks for it.

Curious what your own pillars look like? The BaZi chart tool computes them in seconds.
